NEW ZEALAND - Government moves to tighten up laws on contraband smuggling in prisons are already copping criticism. A law change will be introduced to Parliament in August to crack down on the smuggling of drugs, cell phones, and other illicit electrical gear. Corrections Minister Damien O'Connor says the proposed laws are a reflection of the challenges prisons face. He says drugs and technology have changed and authorities need to keep one step ahead so they can prosecute those that flout the law. Under the proposed law those caught smuggling contraband could be fined up to $5,000, or imprisoned for three months. Read more.
