| Head-on crash kills one, injuries another |

A state [CO] died when his SUV collided head-on with a pickup truck on Route 5 in the Town of Portland. The truck was driven by a county corrections [officer]. State police said the collision killed Daniel B. Shanahan, 43, of Buffalo, who was heading west on Route 5 for work at the Lakeview Shock Facility. Shanahan was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, John A. Mackowiak, 55, of Dunkirk, was traveling east when the two vehicles collided at about 7:26 a.m. He was transported by Starflight to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., where he is being treated for numerous internal injuries. Mackowiak was returning home from a shift at the Chautauqua County Jail when his pickup collided with Shanahan's SUV on a curvy portion of Route 5 about two-tenths of a mile west of Berry Road. A state police accident reconstruction team was investigating. |
