| S.C. looks to cut cost of disputes |

COLUMBIA, SC - South Carolina has paid more than $530,000 in legal bills and settlements involving disputes with staff at the state's prisons agency during the past couple of years. The payouts were one of the reasons state Sen. Mike Fair, R-Greenville, and other S.C. legislators last week called for hearings to review the Cabinet-level Department of Corrections. "In every instance, we had no choice but to take the actions we did," agency director Jon Ozmint said. "My opinion is that doing the wrong thing is more costly to our agency in the long term."
