| One quarter of all prisoners gang members |

NEW ZEALAND - A quarter of all prisoners in New Zealand are gang members or affiliates, the Corrections Minister said today. Speaking to the parliamentary law and order select committee, Damien O'Connor said the number in New Zealand prisons was over 8000, an all-time high, and well up on projections. A "disturbing reality" was 50 per cent of them were Maori, and a quarter were gang members, which represented a "unique challenge" to Corrections staff. Read more.
