| N.J. youth corrections director to retire |

TRENTON, NJ — The director of the state agency that jails and tries to rehabilitate New Jersey's wayward youth says he is retiring, with admitted sadness, after unions called for his firing in the wake of a melee on Easter Sunday. Howard Beyer, who has been executive director of the Juvenile Justice Commission since 2002, acknowledged the shadow cast on his nearly six years in charge by the April 8 attack at a Middlesex County facility in which a few officers were seriously hurt.
