County prepares work release program

JOHNSON COUNTY, KS - Johnson County law enforcement officials want to start a work release program by mid-October for low risk offenders in jail.

Department of Corrections Director Betsy Gillespie told Johnson County commissioners on May 31 that justice officials, who have been studying the idea for years, want to start the program soon to help ease jail overcrowding.

A Kansas law that mandates drivers convicted of a fourth drunken driving charge be sentenced to 90 days in jail contributes to jail overcrowding, Gillespie said, and prompted justice officials to fast-track the program. Read more.
