SAN QUENTIN, CA - The federal receiver who controls medical services inside California's prisons opened a $1.6 million emergency room at San Quentin State Prison on Thursday, offering it as a model for the modernization he said is needed throughout the system. The 24-hour "triage and treatment area" replaces one that receiver Robert Sillen said was deteriorating and dangerously inadequate.
