While officers searched their cells for fruit juice Tuesday night, several inmates at the Lewis and Clark Detention Center in Montana attempted to stage a small-scale riot. Several sheriff's deputies and police officers, including one of the Helena Police Department's K-9 units, quickly brought the incident to an end. No one was injured in the incident, and order was promptly restored at the facility, said Sheriff Cheryl Liedle, but two inmates are facing criminal charges in connection with their alleged involvement in the incident. According to Liedle, the disturbance began at around 10 p.m. as detention officers at the facility moved about seven residents of one of the jail "pods" into the facility's library for holding while the officers conducted a routine "shake-down" of the area. She explained that several of the inmates have been attempting to conceal juice from their meal rations in an effort to make an alcoholic concoction and the search was an effort by officers to curb that practice. While the inmates were waiting in the library, one of the men - Peter Hallberg - became agitated and began kicking one of the desks in the room. At that point, several of the other men began yelling and joining in the activity. Liedle said several officers and the K-9 unit were called to the facility to help detention officers return the men to their jail "pod." While the officers were ushering the group back to their regular holding area, another one of the inmates - David Garrison - allegedly shouted to other inmates, stating, "You guys ready to riot? We're going to riot." Liedle said the inmates continued to yell and throw objects within the pod for several minutes, but soon began to calm down. According to Liedle, officers did not have to use pepper spray or stun guns to stop the activity, but instead relied on a "real show of force" to bring the situation back under control. |
