CHICAGO, IL - A Cook County correctional officer was killed Sunday morning after he lost control of his vehicle on Chicago's South Side, authorities said. Robert Williams, 43, was driving west on East 85th Street shortly before 2 a.m. when he swerved to avoid hitting a motorcycle in his path near the 8500 block of South South Chicago Avenue, Officer John Mirabelli said. Williams lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole and a parked pickup truck, Mirabelli said. Williams was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Another man in the vehicle was transported to Stroger Hospital, Mirabelli said. His condition was not known. Williams, of the 8100 block of South Talman Avenue, has worked with the Department of Corrections since 1990, said Penny Mateck, a sheriff's spokeswoman. Mirabelli said the motorcycle driver was not injured or cited. |
