| Oregon COs stick with union |

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees will continue to represent about 1,700 state Corrections Department security staff after a 663-480 vote to stay with AFSCME. The Association of Oregon Corrections Employees had challenged AFSCME as the bargaining representative for those workers. The association filed a petition in March to decertify AFSCME. The Oregon Employment Relations Board approved that petition and at the end of May and AFSCME mailed ballots to union members. The results were announced Friday. The association represents about 750 members in the Oregon State Penitentiary, Oregon State Correctional Institution, Mill Creek Correctional Facility, South Fork Forest Camp and Oregon Corrections Enterprises. Ron Lawson, executive vice president of the association, said the challenge was made to give Oregon correctional employees a choice. Oregon AFSCME Executive Director Ken Allen said he will ask the state to renew the collective bargaining process as quickly as possible. When the employment board approved the association's petition, state law froze bargaining between AFSCME and the Corrections Department until the outcome of the representation election was determined. "We want to get back to the table and work on our contract," Loving said. "That's what we do. |
