SEVIERVILLE , TN - Maintaining a jail and keeping up with its inmates is a full-time task under the best of conditions. It's even more difficult when the population at the jail exceeds what it was designed to hold. That means a lot of work at the Sevier County Jail, where the certified capacity is 214 but the population has reached as high as 330. The jail must accept prisoners who are arrested by any law enforcement agency in the county. But when the jail population gets so high, it not only creates issues of supervision and bed space - it also means they must find ways to take care of the inmates' medical needs, laundry, mail and other issues.
