SAUK COUNTY, WI - Opponents' concerns about the possible risks of opening a section of the Sauk County jail to state prisoners left supporters three votes short of the two-thirds majority they needed after a night of tough debate, Tuesday. With minutes ticking ever closer to midnight, 18 Sauk County supervisors voted to amend the 2007 budget to hire nearly 15 jail staff and open the 94-bed section of the jail. The proposal was opposed by 13 supervisors, leaving the resolution short of the 21 votes needed to pass. Interest in opening the section, called Pod A, was sparked when state prison officials told Sheriff Randy Stammen they would agree to year-long contracts to use the facility.
