GREENSBORO, AL — Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner Richard F. Allen is considering selling a large portion or all of the Farquhar State Cattle Ranch south of Greensboro to help fill a $30 million deficit in the department’s operation budget. Next week, Allen will present his recommendations on how to plug the hole in the budget to Gov. Bob Riley, which could include the sale of the 4,610-acre ranch. Allen said all recommendations made to Riley will have to be approved by the governor before an actions are taken with the facility or the adjacent properties. “Right know we are looking at all options,” Allen said about the possibility of selling the ranch. “There is a budget hole we have to fill, so we are exploring all options to do so.” Read more.
