Three escapees are arrested after standoff

A Seattle, Wash. police SWAT team used tear gas to flush out three escapees of a juvenile detention center from the West Seattle home where they had taken refuge Sunday afternoon.
The three 17-year-old prisoners escaped from the Maple Lane School in southern Thurston County Saturday evening. Seattle police learned at 10:16 a.m. Sunday that they were in a home in the 9400 block of 37th Avenue Southwest and deployed the SWAT team and hostage negotiators to the Fauntleroy neighborhood.
Next-door neighbor Pat Henry was asked about 11 a.m. to leave her home by police, who used her place to maintain surveillance on the rental home where the juveniles were holed up.
Henry and a neighbor across the street, Lynne Chellew, said they don't know the occupants of the house other than by sight.
Chellew said one man who lives there emerged from the house and got something from his car when police told him to "stop, drop it, put your hands up and back out of the driveway." He was frisked by officers and led away, but was not put in handcuffs.
About a half-dozen people came out of the house and each one was frisked and led away without being shackled, Chellew and Henry said. But the escapees remained inside.
The police finally decided to put an end to the saga, shooting several rounds of tear gas a window at 2:53 p.m.
"They said, 'Come out with your hands up,' and they came out one at a time," Chellew said. The police ordered the teens to lie face down on the driveway spread-eagle. "Then the police came over cuffed them."
Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said the juveniles did not force their way into the home and knew people in the house.
No weapons were found, and no one was injured in the standoff, Whitcomb said. The juveniles were taken to the Southwest Precinct for questioning.
