| Opinion - No condoms for convicts |

YUCCA VALLEY, CA - As a victims’ rights advocate in the Assembly, I have been privy to a great number of legislative proposals which have given me pause. From attempts to weaken our “Three Strikes” law, to changing the way in which we can sentence criminals, members in the Legislature have repeatedly shown that they are out of touch with the priorities and needs of average Californians. Time and again, these proposals slip under the radar of the press and public at large. Legislators are content to push such legislation, secure in the belief that they will not face any public scrutiny — no matter how ludicrous the bill. These kinds of bills litter the political landscape here in Sacramento. This year there is a bill proposed by the majority party that completely reverses the concept of crime and punishment. AB 1334 would require condoms, dental dams and other “sexual barrier devices” to be distributed in prisons. Rather than giving corrections officers the tools they need to enforce a standing policy, this bill simply decriminalizes condoms and other paraphernalia. Read more.
