SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Jesus Valdez had no idea who his neighbors were. A truck driver by trade, he is often away from home. In fact, when police came to the neighbor's house earlier this month, he was away. When he returned, he learned from a newspaper article that a killing had occurred next door. His neighbor, a convicted rapist, had been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of a roommate. "It's been hell living next to these people," Valdez said, standing on his neatly trimmed lawn and looking at the shabby house next door. "But I never knew just how serious the danger was." Valdez's shocked dismay echoes that of many in his neighborhood, a cluster of single-family homes just south of Cajon Boulevard in the city's north end. Read more.
