NEW ZEALAND - In Parliament on Tuesday, National spokesperson Simon Power demanded that the Government explain the bonuses, which included a payment of $20,000 to one staff member. He says that in the past 18 months the department has been caught up in construction budget blowouts, the death of Liam Ashley, the Graeme Burton debacle, riots and staff corruption. Corrections Minister Damien O'Connor says the department is not perfect, but claims a huge amount of good work is being done and escapes have fallen 78% since 1999. |
