IRELAND - Justice Minister Brian Lenihan has announced a series of measures aimed at cracking down on drugs, violence and gangland activity in Irish prisons. Mr Lenihan said last night that 178 prison staff would be recruited as soon as possible to take part in a special unit aimed at preventing drugs, weapons and mobile phones from being smuggled into jail. The move follows widespread claims that gangland figures are still controlling their empires from behind bars by using mobile phones. Under the new initiatives, sniffer dogs will also be used to detect drugs in prisons, while security screening will be introduced to prevent prison staff and visitors from bringing in contraband. |
