MONTGOMERY, AL - State Department of Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen will meet with Gov. Bob Riley today to discuss a plan to resolve the department’s budget woes.

The Department of Corrections previously presented a plan that includes selling prison land to fill a $30 million gap in its operating budget.

Allen declined to disclose his recommendations Tuesday, and Riley’s office has refused to reveal details of the plan.

Earlier this month, supervisors at the Farquhar State Cattle Ranch near Greensboro informed employees that the Department of Corrections would sell about 3,600 acres of the prison farm and shut down its catfish and cattle operation. Corrections officials said land at several prison facilities is being considered for sale.

In April, the state sold 540 acres of State Cattle Ranch land known as West End Swamp for $1.6 million. The sale sparked controversy, with some hunters and fishermen who used the land for recreation adamantly opposed.
