CRANSTON, RI - A new law that allows the state to jail 17-year-olds in adult prisons might actually cost taxpayers more than the governor and lawmakers had hoped, according to a report published Sunday. The latest state budget assumes the change will save $3.6 million over the next 12 months by sending the juveniles to adult prisons -- where the state spends an average of $39,000 a year per inmate -- rather than the Rhode Island Training School, where it costs $98,000, according to the Providence Journal.Read more.
