CHOWCHILLA, CA – The decision to transfer about 600 female inmates from Southern California to two already crowded San Joaquin Valley prisons could keep prisoners from getting access to adequate health care, the court-appointed overseer of prison medical care said. About 300 women are now sleeping in prison gymnasiums and day rooms at both the Valley State Prison for Women and the Central California Women's Facility, which sit next to one another in Chowchilla. The population at both prisons has swollen since March, when the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation closed the women's wing of the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco.
