SOUTH AFRICA - Gay and lesbian inmates will be allowed to marry in South African prisons, according to the country’s Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections reported that 600 prisoners around the country are seeking marriage rights and noted that many of those requests came from gay and lesbian convicts. South African joined a handful of counties in 2006, including Canada and The Netherlands, by recognising gay marriage, making it the fifth nation to do so. Department of Corrections spokesman Manelisi Wolela, spoke to the Cape Argus newspaper and said the department would uphold the 2005 Constitutional Court declaration that that denying same-sex couples the rights of marriage was unconstitutional. Wolela, however, assured that there would be a strict application process. "This is to ensure that the marriage is not just a marriage of convenience that could allow them to be in one cell," he explained. |
