| Commisson hears input on racial disparities |

RACINE, WI - A racial disparity exists in the criminal justice system, but it isn't easy to figure out why, or what to do about it. The Governor's Commission on Reducing Racial Disparities in the Wisconsin Justice System came to Racine Monday afternoon for the first of a series of public hearings throughout the state. Gov. Jim Doyle created the commission in March to study why people of color are more likely to be arrested and imprisoned than their white counterparts, and to suggest improvements. Co-chair State Sen. Spencer Coggs, D-Milwaukee, added Monday that the commission's task is to look at why the racial disparities exist, in areas like infant mortality, education and the justice system. Read more.
