CONCORD, NH - Dear Gov. Lynch: The New Hampshire prison system has been in operation since 1812 and its officers work diligently 24/7 everyday to ensure and protect the public's safety. I was disheartened when I realized that these officers were not included in Senate Bill 169 that created and extended a death benefit to the families of police and firefighters killed in the line of duty. The Department of Corrections is the largest law enforcement agency in our state and has more officers than any other agency or department. These officers and their families deserve the same honor passed onto them, if they were ever to become fatally injured in the line of duty. The officers' families should be entitled to this death benefit and be treated with the same dignity and respect afforded all of our other fallen officers. Corrections officers are law enforcement professionals. This is an injustice that needs to be corrected. |
