Lawmakers grilled the head of the Illinois Corrections Department last Tuesday over plans to close prisons in Vandalia and St. Charles. Corrections Director Roger Walker says it was his decision to close the prisons. He says he made the decisions based on the age and costs of running the prisons and then gave his recommendation to Governor Rod Blagojevich's staff. Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee demanded to see the figures used to justify closing them. The department's fiscal director says there is no complete analysis. Lawmakers also suggested that closing the prisons would increase danger to officers in the state's other overcrowded prisons. |
