False alarm evacuates court complex

BROOKLYN, NY - The state court complex at 320-330 Jay St. was evacuated during the lunch hour yesterday when a fire alarm went off on the third floor. It was a false alarm.

There have been about a dozen false alarms in the new 32-story building, according to an unofficial source. They are often caused by defendants in the Department of Corrections’ holding pens who have discovered a way to set off the sprinkler system.
The sprinklers flood the pens, set off the fire alarm and automatically notify the Fire Department. At the same time, the alarm signals the elevators, which are programmed to drop directly down to the lobby and stay there. Once this safety system is triggered, it is impossible to reset the elevators until the Fire Department arrives and declares the building safe. Read more.
