EASTON, PA - A record-breaking number of inmates at Northampton County prison has officials juggling beds and eyeing the prison gym, which does not have air conditioning, as a temporary home. The county's inmate count was up to 841 by Tuesday morning. "That's a new all-time record," Corrections Director Todd Buskirk said. The influx of inmates coincides with a staffing crunch. Buskirk is working to hire the 24 correctional officers county council approved in the 2007 budget and has said he's requesting additional staff in his 2008 budget. Read more.
