Young inmates at a northeast Georgia prison are constantly in danger of being raped or killed and should be moved immediately, an Atlanta advocacy group said last Wednesday. The Southern Center for Human Rights, citing the rape and strangulation last week of 18-year-old Wayne Boatwright Jr. by other inmates at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, urged the removal of all inmates under 21 from the prison. The center wants inmates under 21 held in a separate facility, said staff attorney Sarah Geraghty. In a letter delivered last Wednesday to state Corrections Commissioner James Donald, the center said Arrendale "has long had a well-deserved reputation as a troubled and violent prison." The nonprofit law firm asked that outside experts be brought in to evaluate the prison's safety for both inmates and employees. The letter cites six other beatings and stabbings of Arrendale inmates from 2001 to 2003, and asks officials to make investigative reports of the incidents available for public inspection. Scheree Lipscomb, Corrections spokeswoman, said Donald was out of the office last Wednesday and had not seen the letter. The department takes such matters seriously and is cooperating in the GBI probe of Boatwright's murder, she said. |
