Corrections can be an incredibly challenging field for women. No one understood this better or worked harder to change that than Susan Cranford.Cranford, the former president of the Texas Corrections Association, passed away earlier this year. Now friends and co-workers are honoring her legacy with the Susan B. Cranford Memorial Scholarship. “She was a wonderful individual and was very interested in women being able to become more recognized and have more opportunities within the corrections profession,” says TCA Executive Director Chuck Space. The scholarship will be awarded to a female student pursuing a criminal justice college degree. “We wanted to help empower this individual to make the kind of special differences that Susan stood for,” Space says. Cranford began her career in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. She became Senior Warden in 1985 of the largest Texas female prison, the Gatesville Unit. Over subsequent years, she led many different TDCJ divisions into new directions for positive change. “She was a major influence in providing more opportunity for the agency’s minority employees, recruiting women for non-traditional positions, and committing passionately to provide the very best programs for women offenders,” says Space. In 2003, Cranford received the TCA Clarence A. Stevenson Award for lifetime contribution to the field of community corrections. After her career with the agency, she consulted for the National Institute of Corrections. She also published several articles advocating for female offenders and correctional employees. “Susan inspired thousands of women throughout the nation, and her outspoken advocacy and support of women’s issues helped shatter the glass ceiling for women employed in the field,” adds Space. The scholarship program is open to students already accepted into a college criminal justice degree program, and the award recipient will receive $500. “Those of us who knew and loved Susan believe that this scholarship fund will be a legacy worthy of her iconic stature,” says Space, “and will, as she did, serve to nurture the future generation of corrections professionals.” TCA is currently seeking donations to support the scholarship fund.
