State plans to stop prison work crews

LANSING, MI - More than 1,500 state prison inmates who cut grass, shovel snow and perform some other work at relatively low cost for local governments are being idled in a cost-cutting move by the Michigan Department of Corrections.

The plans were announced Tuesday as the state prison system is trying to save money during Michigan's government budget crunch. The crews, which typically have between eight and 10 members each, will stop working in about 30 days. Read more.
