The Justice Policy Institute recently released, Gang Wars: The Failure of Enforcement Tactics and the Need for Effective Public Safety Strategies. It discusses research on gangs in an attempt to clarify misconceptions and also examine the effectiveness of common gang control strategies. For example, report researchers found that in cities like Los Angeles, where gang activity is most prevalent, an increase in police, prisons and punitive measures haven’t stopped the cycle of gang violence. The report also includes information about how gangs contribute to a relatively small share of crime; that gang activity has not grown in the U.S.; that whites make up a large proportion of gang members; and that most gang-involved youth quit before reaching adulthood.
