New prosecution unit targets gangs

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Montgomery County officials announced yesterday the creation of Maryland's first gang prosecution unit, designed to curtail what officials say is a growing problem.

Under the new system, five assistant state's attorneys will be alerted as soon as a gang member is arrested, giving prosecutors more time and flexibility in preparing cases for trial, Montgomery State's Attorney John J. McCarthy said. Previously, the office had one prosecutor assigned to gang cases. Read more.
