North Dakota's crowded prison system could get some relief next month. State officials say they are gearing up to move inmates to a private prison in Minnesota. The Prairie Correctional Center in Appleton, Minnesota, has been used before to help with overflow in the North Dakota prison system. That contract has lapsed, but state corrections director Elaine Little says the department is working to renew it. The move comes as North Dakota prisons face continuing crowding problems. Little says the prisons break records for inmate numbers almost weekly. There are now about 1,300 prisoners in the system, including about 70 housed in county jails. The Minnesota facility is owned by Tennessee-based Corrections Corporation of America. |
