PROVIDENCE, RI - Rhode Island's prison system can add more than 150 beds at the crowded Adult Correctional Institutions, under an agreement reached this week with a lawyer for a group of prisoners. Under the deal, the Department of Corrections will gradually add 144 beds at a medium-security facility and another 10 beds in high security. In 1994, state authorities settled a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union's National Prison Project to improve conditions at the state's only prison. It requires the Department of Corrections to seek approval for increasing the prison population above preset thresholds. Read more.
