| Monitor of Fulton jail overhaul dies |

FULTON COUNTY, GA - The expert assigned to monitor efforts to clean up the Fulton County Jail, Patrick McManus, died Sunday at a Minnesota hospital, according to his family. He was 69. McManus was hospitalized more than two weeks ago with a series of problems. His illness began with a toe infection; that infection spread to other areas and consequently his kidneys and liver were damaged. Over the course of two weeks he had several small strokes. Though based in Minnesota, McManus was chosen last year to monitor the Fulton County Jail's efforts to comply with a federal court order to clean up the facility, improve safety and to make about $55 million in renovations. In the 18 months that followed, he fought frequently with Fulton Sheriff Myron Freeman and the sheriff's attorney and top staff over the requirements of the court order, signed in February 2006.
