UNITED STATES - California and other states with crowded prisons are increasingly sending inmates across state lines to prisons run by private companies. California last week sent 40 inmates to Mississippi and plans to transfer at least 8,000 more to other states, The New York Times reported Tuesday. An estimated 2,000 of Hawaii's state inmates are being held in private prisons in Oklahoma, Mississippi and Kentucky, while Alabama has 1,300 prisoners in Louisiana, the Times said. Arizona has more than 37,000 state inmates -- 127 percent of its official prison capacity. Tents set up in several prisons handle the overflow and more than 2,000 prisoners have been transferred to Indiana and Oklahoma. The country's inmate population is at an all-time high, rising 2.8 percent from July 2005 to July 2006 to 2,245,189, the Times reported. The prison population is expected to grow by another 192,000 in the next five years. |
