JUNEAU, AK – The American Probation and Parole Association awarded its 2007 Community Awareness through Media Award to the Gastineau Human Services Corporation, a partner of the United Way of Southeast Alaska. Gastineau, which provides transitional programs and services for ex-offenders, won for a television commercial and print ad public service campaign. The announcement says, “Every year over 650,000 prisoners are released across the United States. They return to our neighborhoods, villages, and cities. How ready are our children, families, businesses? How ready are you? We can help.” The campaign was created by Gastineau Human Services Corporation Executive Director Greg Pease. “For twenty years I have heard from my peers that the public doesn’t understand what we do or understand the challenges we face,” says Pease, who estimates the campaign has reached hundreds of thousands of Alaskans. The APPA Media Award recognizes accomplishments in media broadcast, publication, or film that broaden the public’s understanding of the U.S. criminal justice system. |
