Reminiscent of a scene from a Three Stooges flick, two inmates tried to mosey out the front gates of the St. Louis Correctional Facility in Michigan last weekend after they used shoe polish to paint their prison garb black. Officers, who wear black uniforms, tackled James R. Simmons Jr. and Dwayne T. Thomas as they tried to leave the medium-security facility, said Leo R. Lalonde, a state Department of Corrections spokesman. Lalonde said Simmons and Thomas also placed photo-copies of the officers' patches on their caps. "It was about 3 p.m. during shift change, so there was movement," Lalonde said. "We have employees walking in and out at that time. "An officer did not recognize these two as employees, and he ordered them to stop. They ran and they were tackled. It was over in a matter of seconds. They never got through the secure door." State police from the Ithaca Post later questioned two women seen driving away from the lockup immediately after the escape attempt. Lalonde did not know the outcome of the interview. Simmons and Thomas are serving sentences of up to 60 years for a variety of offenses. Simmons, 42, was jailed on multiple armed robbery charges and a felony firearms charge in Oakland and Wayne counties, Department of Corrections records show. Simmons has previous armed robbery and weapons convictions. Thomas, 25, was serving time on charges that include felony firearms possession, assault of a prison employee, armed robbery, attempted unarmed robbery and malicious destruction of police or fire property in Genesee and Kent counties, state records show. A prosecutor likely will decide whether to charge the pair in the escape attempt, which is a felony, Lalonde said. |
