A male to female transgender prisoner was sentenced to additional prison time Feb. 27 for assaulting an officer during a scuffle at the State Correctional Institution at Graterford, Pa. in 2001. Shawn Shannon Quinnones, formerly known as Michael Murphy, was sentenced to 21/2 to 5 years in state prison, to be followed by four years' probation, after pleading guilty to a felony charge of assault by a prisoner in connection with the June 14, 2001, incident at the Skippack facility. Montgomery County Judge Kent H. Albright said the prison term will run consecutively to the 9- to 18-year sentence Quinnones is already serving for a 1997 conviction for robberies in Upper Merion and Abington. Quinnones, 33, of Philadelphia, who has undergone some surgical procedures to become a female but who has not completed the gender reassignment, admitted to scuffling with officers and scratching one when officers attempted to conduct a strip search. Quinnones, who lawyers and the judge addressed as a woman, testified Feb. 27 that the officers wanted to conduct the strip search in view of other inmates and a struggle ensued when Quinnones refused. Authorities had accused Quinnones of spitting at the officer and throwing feces at the officer. While testifying, Quinnones didn't recall spitting or throwing feces at the officer. In court documents, police said Quinnones is HIV positive and Quinnones was originally charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. However, those more serious charges were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea to the charge of assault by a prisoner. |
