COs help with bridge collapse

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Minnesota Department of Corrections has teamed up with the Minnesota Police Department by providing COs for perimeter security duty around the site of the Minneapolis bridge collapse.

“The police are letting us know when they are in need of assistance,” says MNDOC Director of Communications Shari Burt. “We had a crew of ten COs from around the state there for a ten hour shift. We are helping out on an as needed basis, and we are committed to providing them with whatever assistance they need.”

The DOC has also been in contact with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and offered the assistance of offender work crews for clean up or other needs.

“We think they’ll probably involve offender crews somewhere down the road,” Burt says, “but that isn’t occurring right now.”

The eight-lane bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed on August 1. Five people are confirmed dead, and eight others are still missing.

“They are still in the very treacherous process of removing pieces of the bridge and cars,” Burt says.

The clean up may cost as much as $15 million.
