MICHIGAN - A pilot program that will shift mentally ill people out of jail and into long-term treatment has been approved by the chief judges of three Genesee County courts. The program will allow mentally ill people charged with certain offenses to avoid conviction if they plead guilty and complete a yearlong treatment regimen, according to an order signed last week by district, circuit and probate court judges.
