Fulton County Sheriff Jackie Barrett announced late last Wednesday that she will fire three high-ranking jail deputies after two inmates were mistakenly released from the facility Tuesday. A civilian who worked as a computer operator at the jail also will be let go, Barrett said. Lt. Clarence Huber, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department, said the department is withholding the names of the deputies because not all of them had been officially notified last Wednesday night. In a statement, Barrett said the termination stems from a zero tolerance policy she implemented in December. "Zero tolerance means zero tolerance," Barrett said. "This was a breach that will simply not be tolerated." One inmate was released after the computer operator overlooked an outstanding warrant that would have kept him in custody. Huber refused to name the inmate, saying that officials are close to tracking him down. The second inmate, Sterling Bruno, 31, was released because an employee did not adhere to the release process in place at the jail, Huber said. Bruno, who had been arrested on a burglary charge, has been recaptured and transferred to Gwinnett County, where he has charges pending. Last year, Barrett was embarrassed by incidents in which inmates were inadvertently released. |
