Gov. plan to ease prison strain

PENNSYLVANIA - Gov. Ed Rendell wants the state to allow early release for nonviolent offenders and to move some inmates from overcrowded county prisons to state facilities as part of prison reform plans.

The news comes as Northampton County Prison set another all-time high of 879 inmates Tuesday, Corrections Director Todd Buskirk said. The prison's capacity is 819 inmates, which is why some inmates are now housed in the prison gym, he said. Read more.
