ILLINOIS - Just days after losing its state funding, the prominent violence-prevention program CeaseFire was criticized Wednesday in a report by the Illinois auditor's office for not effectively keeping track of millions of dollars during the last three years. CeaseFire officials say the problems the audit uncovered reflect the inherent pitfalls of operating a street-level organization that enlists former gang members to mediate disputes and often saves lives. Officials with the group, the largest of its kind in the city, say there has been no mismanagement of money, only incomplete accounting, which they are working on improving. Read more.
