Single state jail system proposed

MAINE - Maine Gov. John Baldacci on Thursday proposed folding county jails into a single statewide system to resolve overcrowding, cut costs and help ease local property taxes.

The Democratic governor said in a statement county jails cost property taxpayers $66 million in 2006 and these costs would rise to $184 million by 2015 if nothing is done. Read more.
