ALASKA – A team of 11 inmates from Palmer Correctional Center cleared 5.2 tons of highway roadside trash in just five weekends from July to August.

The community work service team also helped the Knik Tribal Council, a nonprofit tribal entity, to clean and repairs fences in Council’s cemetery.

“[Inmates] are not compelled to take part,” Commissioner Joe Schmidt says. “This is an opportunity for an offender to help the community in which they have caused harm.”

The crew also separates recyclable materials from the trash they collect. The AKDOC is considering expanding the cleanup program to more communities.
