New program focuses on female parolees

CONNECTICUT - Some state probation officers have received special training under a new federal pilot program to help women who are on probation.

The officers will be closely following the progress of nearly 300 female parolees to see if the new approach works better than the current one. A $400,000 grant from the National Institute of Corrections is paying for the pilot program.

The number of women in prison has increased 700 percent since the 1970s. Probation officials say many of those women's crimes are linked to unhealthy relationships, and the pilot program will focus on boosting their self-esteem, among other things. Read more.
