Jail construction halted

MAINE - Somerset County commissioners are expected to vote today to suspend indefinitely construction on the county’s new $30 million jail in response to Gov. John Baldacci’s plan to have the state take over the county jails.

"If the governor is coming to knock on our jail door, he’d better bring his checkbook," Philip Roy Jr., chairman of the Somerset County commissioners, said Tuesday. Read more.
