Fla. Jail officials mistakenly release inmate awaiting trial

Miami jail officials accidentally released an inmate awaiting trial for attempted murder of a police officer because they mixed him up with another inmate with the same last name.
Victor Rodriguez, 40, was released Tuesday night after a jail official confused him with an inmate named Rolando Rodriguez.
Neither of the two men was due to get out of jail.
Police caught up with Victor Rodriguez Wednesday and took him back into custody.
The problem occurred Tuesday after Rolando Rodriguez was taken into custody at the jail, where he was supposed to serve 60 days for petty theft and carrying a concealed weapon.
A jail official confused Rolando Rodriguez for Victor Rodriguez, who had served more than 60 days. So the official filed paperwork allowing Victor Rodriguez credit for time served.
Victor Rodriguez was arrested last July for assaulting a Miami police officer.
The officer had tried to commit him to a psychiatric ward for an evaluation after a disturbance. Police said Victor Rodriguez pummeled the officer, tried to stab the officer with the officer's pen and grabbed for the officer's gun.
He was charged with attempted murder on a police officer, aggravated assault on an officer, resisting arrest and trespassing, according to court records.
"Were just grateful the person was brought into custody," said jail spokeswoman Janelle Hall, who acknowledged that the mix-up was an error.
