Jails can bill inmates for costs

CINCINNATI - Jails in Campbell and Kenton counties may continue to take money directly from their inmates' accounts to pay for booking fees and other costs, a federal appellate panel has ruled.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in a decision released Wednesday, rejected the inmates' contention that the jails had to hold a hearing before removing the money from the accounts. The three-judge panel, sitting in Cincinnati, ruled unanimously that - partly because of the small amount of money involved - such hearings would be more trouble than they are worth. Read more.
